We learned about enzymes at the end of the week. We learned about all the positive effects these enzymes have on our body when they accelerate reactions and help our body function. But this article illustrates that other organisms, such as bacteria use enzymes of their own cause harm to humans and animals. By understanding how this works, I think we may be able to create better disease prevention methods. I believe that this research has potential to help humanity in the future.

Engineers have found a way to 3-D polymers to make thicker layers of insulating material for spaceships. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem if you were to say, 3-D print a cat, but these polymers start to disassemble like in protein denaturation. However, through using a combination of mixed materials and more heat resistant macromolecules, they were able to use this new polyimide. Macromolecules aren't just for eating! :^)

This video takes a look at nucleic acids. Just by the images shown in the video, you can distinguish between RNA and DNA. The images of the nucleotides are very clear and easy to understand. The different colours help with understanding the relationships between the nitrogen bases and which pairs with which.

Very large amounts of protein is found in humans. Protein helps to fight off infections and provide a healthier body for many humans. Protein is used in hormones for example insulin which helps regulate the sugar levels in any mammal. The lack of protein in certain parts like the brain can lead to many different diseases. Another macromolecule in real life situations would be enzymes and they help to speed up the process of a chemical reaction. Enzymes play a large role in the digestive system with breaking down the food so it makes it easier for the body t digest the food being taken in.

Proteins are an important part of life on Earth, and in class we took a look at the folding process. It's hard to keep track of the millions of proteins in the human body, but learning more about the shape (and by extension, function) would be invaluable to researchers. To speed up the process, scientists at the University of Washington created a game that allowed players to create folded proteins for professional analysis using the natural problem-solving skills computer algorithms lacked. It took only three weeks to solve the riddle of an HIV enzyme that puzzled science for years.
